ConsoleWorks 3.0 Frequently Asked Questions
Section: Communications Issues
Question:
How can I send multiple commands (or canned text) to a console?
Answer:
Use the CWTerm application to send a text file to a console port:
ConsoleWorks> SEND "filename.txt"/CONSOLE=console_name
General format (UNIX/Windows):
send "filename" -console=name
[-binary] [-terminator=string]
General format (OpenVMS):
send "filename" /console=name
[/binary] [/terminator=string]
The text file, filename.txt, contains the commands you want to send to
console_name. You must enclose filename in quotes.

Question:
I've just created my first console. Nothing happens when I click the connection
icon.
Answer:
(This answer was checked against the Firefox browser in particular. Please
note that Firefox is not an officially supported browser for use with
ConsoleWorks.)
Does your local computer have the Sun Java runtime environment (1.4.0 or
higher) installed? If not, you may try the following steps:
Click Change-> Connect Settings.
Select "Use x-appletviewer helper" and click "update"
Go to Manage->Consoles->Show Consoles and click the connection icon
again. A popup will ask how to handle files having a .xap extension.
Click the browse button, and navigate to:
/opt/ConsoleWorks/samples/call_cwterm.sh.
Select that file, and check "always do this automatically."
Afterward, the connection icon should work.

Question:
I'm moving ConsoleWorks to another machine. Will a different IP address affect ConsoleWorks?
Answer:
Before the move, log in via your browser and go to the menu item for
Admin->Server->Configuration. If the first field, (Server Host
Address) is 0.0.0.0, then there should be no issue. This means
ConsoleWorks will be listening for requests on all NICs and IP's
assigned to the server. (Note that this is usually the correct setting for
machines with multiple NICs.)
If the field has an actual IP address, we suggest
setting it to
0.0.0.0 for the move, testing the configuration, and then changing it to
the new IP address (if required). If any ConsoleWorks users are connecting
via IP address, then they will have to re-create any links or favorites.
If you use the SSL version of ConsoleWorks, please check whether your SSL
certificate was generated using host name or IP address, and regenerate
the certificate(s) as necessary.

Question:
When configuring a Telnet Console, should I select Raw Data?
Answer:
Generally no. Selecting this option will disable telnet option negotiation.
When a telnet connection is being established, both computers will state their
preferences (i.e. "WILL ECHO," meaning "I will echo characters sent to me,")
or request certain behavior from the other computer (i.e. "DONT ECHO.")
The only time you should select Raw Data is at the suggestion of TDi Customer
Support, or as an experiment if the console Just Won't Work.
